Functional Part: Fence

Name

Fence

Identifier

fp_fence

Overview

This functional part defines the requirements for modeling and exchanging fence information in a highway BIM environment. Fences provide boundary definition, security, and livestock control along highway rights-of-way. Fence types include chain-link, barbed wire, wood rail, and specialty security fencing, each serving specific functional requirements.

Results

Purpose

The purpose of this functional part is to standardize the exchange of fence information between design tools and asset systems, enabling accurate right-of-way boundary definition, specification of fence types and materials for cost estimation, integration with property ownership and right-of-way data, quantity extraction for procurement, and long-term asset tracking for maintenance and replacement.

Examples

Example 1: Right-of-Way Fence Installation

Use Case: Document fence installation along new right-of-way boundary for livestock control.

Scenario: A rural highway project requires barbed-wire fence installation along the new right-of-way boundary adjacent to agricultural properties for livestock control and property delineation.

Data Flow:

  1. Designer models fence alignment along right-of-way boundary
  2. Fence type and material specifications assigned per agency standards
  3. Fence data exported with station limits and material specifications
  4. Quantity extracted for bid schedule (linear feet by fence type)

Key Information Exchanged:

  • Fence type: “Barbed wire, 4-strand”
  • Height: 48 inches
  • Post spacing: 16 feet (wood posts)
  • Station limits: 100+00 to 285+75 (both sides of roadway)
  • Total linear footage: 37,150 feet
